The Tollhouse Studio is on the first floor of the historical Tower Buildings, Possil Road and Farnell Street, built 1875

At the foot of a steep hill, once known as Garscube Cross, Renaissance three-storey warehouse above shops, for ironfounder James Allen of Elmbank Foundry on the canal. Corner emphasised by conical roof. In the 1930s the top floor became the Tower Ballroom.

Great men walked the streets: Lyon Street (Now St Josephs School, just across the road from the studio) the most decorated street in Britain after WW1. “over 200 men emerged from a mere half dozen tenement closes in gritty tough Lyon Street off Garscube Road to enlist in almost every Scottish regiment that fought in the First World War” “Lyon Street became famous as the most decorated street in Britain. Medals clinked in every close as the boys came marching home”                -  Oct 16 1962 Evening Times

The Tollhouse got its name because the area of Possil Road, Garscube Road and St Georges Road was always known as the Round Toll, and while building the studio it always felt like home, so The Tollhouse was born.

Hand Grenades: Very little is known about this munitions factory that was on Possil road (possibly a few doors up from the studio) but there is photo evidence of a Mills grenade bottom core stamp stating “Elmbank Foundry” which was based on Possil road. This would have took place somewhere between 1911 and 1915 I believe.

The Astoria Cinema: was described as "the largest working class sound cinema in Scotland" at its opening in 1931. built on a filled-in quarry on Possil Road. The Astoria attracted large audiences for both films and variety performances. It finally was demolished in 1995. (It was situated just up from the studio)

“Chris loves history - Deal with it!”

Chris’ Granny Slade used to walk past this building to get to her work and his mum went to St Joseph’s School just across the road.

Tollhouse Studio has been making music with you guys for 4 years now.

The Studio would never have happened if it wasn’t for Chris moving into the old converted Fire Station on St Georges Road, seeing the building from his flat he enquired when the time was right. Armed with his Uncle Tommy Deeprose and Brother Thom Deeprose they built and built until the job was done.

The Tollhouse only exists because of these people in the beginning and all the fantastic people who have used the studio ever since.

Thank you to everyone who helped build this place, from the manual labourers to the continued custom from the bands and all the friends I’ve made. You all made The Tollhouse what it is and long may it continue to be our home.
